Gutters, Gutter Cleaning and Skylights
Move the Water Off Your Roof and Keep It Out of Your House.
Gutters and skylights are small parts of a roof that cause a large share of its leaks. We install and clean gutters, and we install and repair skylights, on homes across the Mohawk Valley.

Gutters
Seamless Gutter Installation
Gutters protect much more than the roof. They keep water away from your siding, windows, foundation, and basement.
Seamless gutters are made in long continuous runs, so there are joints only at the corners and downspouts. Fewer joints means fewer places to drip, sag, or pull apart under the weight of ice. We install seamless gutters when your project calls for them.
A good gutter installation is about more than the gutter itself. It needs the right slope toward each downspout, enough downspouts for the size of the roof, solid hangers, and downspouts that carry the water away from the foundation.
- Protect the foundationWater carried away from the house instead of soaking in next to it.
- Fewer drips and sagsSeamless runs and solid hangers hold up under snow and ice.

Maintenance
Gutter Cleaning
Clogged gutters overflow, stain siding, and send water toward the foundation. In winter, they hold water that freezes and helps ice dams form at the edge of the roof.
When we clean your gutters, we clear the gutters and downspouts, check that water flows freely, and look for loose hangers, leaking joints, and damage along the roof edge. If we see a problem with the roof while we're up there, we'll photograph it and let you know.
- Gutters and downspouts cleared of leaves and debris.
- Downspouts checked for clogs and flow.
- Loose hangers, leaking joints, and sagging runs noted.
- Photos of anything on the roof edge that needs attention.
Skylights
Skylight Installation and Leak Repair
A skylight brings daylight into a room, but only if it's installed and flashed correctly. When it isn't, it becomes the first place a roof leaks.
For leaks, we start by finding where the water is really coming from. Often it's the flashing around the skylight rather than the skylight itself, and the right flashing repair stops the leak without replacing the unit. When the skylight is old, cracked, or fogged between the panes, replacing it is often the better choice, especially if the roof is being replaced at the same time.
For new skylights, we check the framing, cut and frame the opening, and flash the skylight into the roof so water runs around it and off the roof.
Replacing your roof?
That is the right time to deal with an older skylight. Replacing or reflashing it along with the new roof is simpler than coming back to it later, and it means the skylight and the roof around it start fresh together.
Questions
Gutter and Skylight FAQs
How often should gutters be cleaned?
For most homes, at least once a year, in late fall after the leaves are down. Homes under tall trees often need a spring cleaning as well. Clean gutters going into winter matter most, because a gutter full of leaves holds water that freezes and adds to ice buildup at the eaves.
Do you install gutter guards?
Yes, where a house needs them. Gutter guards help most on homes under tall trees, where gutters fill with leaves quickly. We'll tell you during the inspection whether they make sense for your house.
Why does my skylight leak?
Most skylight leaks come from the flashing around the skylight, not the glass. Flashing that was installed poorly, has pulled loose, or has worn out lets water run under the shingles and into the opening. Sometimes the seal around the glass fails, or condensation inside the frame looks like a leak. We'll find which it is before recommending a repair or a replacement.
Can you add a skylight to a room that doesn't have one?
Yes. We install new skylights where there wasn't one before, and we repair and replace existing skylights. Whether a new one fits depends on the framing above the room and the roof itself, and we'll explain what's involved.
